Lunacy was the FRC game event released by FIRST for 2009. This game challenges teams to use their knowledge of physics to construct a robot that would successfully drive on a 54'x27' low-friction surface similar to that of the moon.
Competitors and their robots manipulate 9 inch balls called "moon rocks" around the field and score them into the opposing alliance trailer. Each trailer was hitched to its corresponding robot.
Robots are allowed 15 seconds of play in autonomous mode, followed by the tele-operated mode for two minutes. Human players recieve 20 Moon Rocks, up to 7 of which may be loaded onto the robot before the match. Players are also given an amount of empty cells and super cells depending on the score in their previous match. If no match has been played yet, then the players are given a total of 4 empty cells and 2 super cells.
All types of rocks must be scored in an opponent robot's trailer to recieve any points. Moon rocks and empty cells yield 2 points. Once super cells are activated, they can be scored to worth a total of 15 points. To activate super cells, robots must maneuver an empty cell from their "Outpost" to their "Fueling Station" during the match. Super cells must also only be scored during the final 20 seconds of a game.
