FIRST® Team 1086 was born when Deep Run High School opened its doors in 2002. Our first robot was IPOE, made during the 2003 build season for the game STACK ATTACK®. In 2004, we became The Pirates of the Black Pearl and competed for the next four years under that name. In 2005, we went to the World Championships for the first time in Atlanta, Georgia.
2007 Alliance
In 2007, our team became much stronger, working with two other local teams to form the Henrico County Triad:FIRST Team 384 Sparky and FIRST Team TALON 540. Flexicell, a palletizing automated robotic packaging company, opened their facilities and we worked alongside real career engineers to build the next generation of robots. The Alliance was incredibly successful at the VCU Regional and we made it to the World Championships again.
2008 - 2009 Alliance
In 2008, we became FIRST Team 1086 Blue Cheese and our team became even more formidable. We grew exponentially--we had recorded figures of a 300% increase in membership. In 2009, our team went global starting our award winning program: Flat Dean & Woodie WorldWide. Showing our true colors, we won the national spirit award in Atlanta. In addition, our relations continued with FIRST Team 384 in The Dynamic Duo.
2010-2012
Adopting the philosophy of the best-selling business book, "Who Moved My Cheese?", we found our WHEY to new cheese. This year our team is celebrating its 10th anniversary and we have reformulated our recipe with two new coaches, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Lucania, a new build site at Powertrain Control Solutions, new sponsors & rekindled enthusiasm. We blended in our core quality ingredients of returning sponsors, mentors, alumni & students in order to give ourselves an improved zesty flavor. All these ingredients CHURN together actively year round in order to ensure that our mixture remains fresh & SHARP. To top it off, our cheese is GARNISHED with 7 alumni/mentors, 20 professional mentors & a dash of supportive parents.
