Around Virginia, nationally and around the globe: It ain’t easy bein cheesy. Around the state, we are educating School Board members, politicians, and community leaders about FIRST® Robotics. Recently, we were honored by the Henrico County School Board. In 2011, we attended the Legislative Reception Day and the Legislative Breakfast where we corresponded with Eric Cantor and Governor Bob McDonnell to keep FIRST Robotics as a legislative priority.
FIRST Demonstrations: We also hold numerous demonstrations at regional events such as the Girl Scouts “Thinking Day”, Girl Scout Centennial Convention, Boy Scouts Blue and Gold Banquet, Science Museum “Scooper Bowl”, The Virginia State Fair, The Innsbrook Rotary Club, Colonial Trail Elementary School, and Twin Hickory Elementary School.
Around the world, we have continued our Flat Dean & Woodie World Wide Programs. By sending out FIRST-approved likenesses of Woodie and Dean, we entice kids to celebrate STEM. This program has its own website and a new Facebook page.
Launched in 2009, our geocaching travel bugs of Flat Dean and Woodie have traveled over 47,386 miles and counting. Geocaching is a high tech game of hide and seek with over 5 million players worldwide. For 2011 we created a new cache with a robotics theme. Players have to solve riddles about FIRST and 1086 to find the hidden treasure. Our travel bugs have been across the US, Germany, Czech Rep., Austria, Canada, and Ireland. Each one explains FIRST & our team. One VA FLL® team started after finding one of our travel bugs!
We enrich our cheese with our newest program: CHED (Cheese Head Engineering Discussions) by inviting engineering professionals to share their careers and knowledge as it applies to our team including risk analysis, inspection, and the engineering design process. We have posted videos of them on YouTube for others to be inspired!
On the Web: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, Gaggle and Google groups are all among the channels our team uses to communicate with each other and the public. Our website has had millions of unique visitors in the past 4 years. FIRST Team 399 EAGLE BOTS made a YouTube video using our Flat Dean and Woodie.
In The Media: In 2010, our team was interviewed by ESPN Radio at the VCU FRC® Regional. We have been featured in numerous newspaper articles, publications, on PBS and on HCPS TV.
Making a Greener World: We participate in FIRST E-CYCLE. We collect and recycle used electronics, helping ourselves and the environment.
Our team is also selling FIRST GREEN e-watt saver LED lightbulbs.
